Heritage & Ethnographic Assets Cataloguing

What heritage assets cataloguing is
Heritage assets cataloguing is the process of systematically identifying, documenting and recording features of historical, cultural, ethnographic or archaeological value within a given area, so that they can be incorporated into official heritage catalogues or duly taken into account in the permitting of projects and urban plans. It ranges from archaeological sites to ethnographic features such as waterwheels, wells, kilns, traditional bridges or vernacular architecture.
When it is carried out
- As part of the cultural heritage inventory of an Environmental Impact Assessment, documenting every feature present within the project area.
- During the drafting of a PGOU or other planning instrument, to incorporate the municipality's catalogue of protected assets.
- As a standalone service for local authorities or bodies wishing to enhance and promote their local heritage.
- Prior to restoration or enhancement works on existing heritage features.
Methodology
- Desk-based review of existing catalogues, archaeological charts and historical archives.
- Fieldwork: survey of the area to identify features not previously catalogued.
- Graphic documentation: photography, planimetry and, where appropriate, photogrammetric or drone-based survey.
- A catalogue record per feature, with description, state of conservation, heritage assessment and proposed level of protection.
- Compilation of the final catalogue, ready to be integrated into urban planning or into the project's environmental documentation.
