What an ecological connectivity study is
An ecological connectivity study analyses the extent to which a territory allows wildlife movement and plant dispersal between different population centres or habitat areas, and assesses the effect a project has on that connectivity. This analysis is increasingly required in the environmental impact assessment of renewable energy and linear infrastructure projects, since barrier effects and habitat fragmentation are cumulative impacts of growing importance across Spain and Europe more broadly.
Why it matters
Ecological connectivity enables gene flow between wildlife populations, facilitates species adaptation to climate change by allowing movement to new suitable areas, and sustains essential ecological processes such as seed dispersal and seasonal migration. The proliferation of linear infrastructure and wind and solar farms across the landscape creates a cumulative fragmentation effect that is receiving increasing attention from environmental authorities.
Methodology
- Identification of existing ecological corridors within the study area, based on official mapping and connectivity models (landscape resistance analysis, circuit theory models).
- Selection of focal species representative of different functional groups (large mammals, mesocarnivores, amphibians) for the connectivity analysis.
- Modelling of landscape permeability before and after the project is implemented, identifying the barrier effect generated.
- Cumulative impact analysis, considering other existing or proposed infrastructure within the same ecological corridor.
- Proposal of measures: wildlife crossings, maintaining installation-free corridors, permeable perimeter fencing, connectivity restoration measures.
Relevance for solar farms
The cumulative effect of multiple fenced solar farms in the same district can cause significant habitat fragmentation for terrestrial species with limited mobility (such as rabbits or certain reptiles), even though each individual project may appear to have a limited impact. A connectivity study makes it possible to anticipate this cumulative effect and propose measures such as species-permeable fencing or maintaining installation-free corridors between nearby farms.
