Archaeological evaluation with test pits is the phase of archaeological investigation in which trial trenches or soundings, dug by hand or by machine at specific points, are used to verify the presence, extent and characteristics of a site previously detected by surface survey, or to rule it out where there are unconfirmed indications of archaeological potential. It is the intermediate stage between surface survey and any eventual open-area excavation.

When it is needed

• When archaeological surface survey detects surface material suggesting a buried site whose extent and stratigraphic depth need to be verified.
• When the culture authority expressly requires it for particular areas of a project with archaeological potential identified at earlier stages.
• As a necessary step before deciding whether a full open-area excavation is warranted, or whether the site is significant enough to condition the project design.

Methodology

1. Design of the test-pit grid, defining the number, location and dimensions of the soundings according to the area to be verified.
2. Excavation of the test pits, by hand or by machine depending on the ground conditions and the authorisation granted.
3. Stratigraphic recording of each sounding, documenting the stratigraphic units identified.
4. Recovery and cataloguing of the archaeological materials retrieved.
5. Preparation of the evaluation report, with conclusions on the extent, significance and state of conservation of the site, and recommendations on the next intervention phases required.

Administrative authorisation

Under Spanish and regional heritage law, archaeological test pitting requires express authorisation from the regional culture authority, which appoints an archaeologist to direct the intervention and sets the technical conditions of the work. Recovered materials must be deposited in the museum or institution designated by the competent authority.
